On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster reshaped the landscape of Fukushima. Since then, I have returned repeatedly over fifteen years, not to document a single catastrophe, but to observe how time transforms a place after public attention fades. Rather than focusing on dramatic moments, this project explores quiet landscapes marked by absence. Abandoned schools, deserted railway stations, contaminated soil, temporary waste storage sites, newly constructed infrastructure, and ordinary fields reveal traces of a disaster that has never truly reached a conclusion. The land continues to change, carrying memories that cannot simply disappear.

The title Silent Witnesses refers to these landscapes themselves. They bear witness without speaking, preserving evidence of human decisions, environmental transformation, and the passage of time. Their silence invites viewers to question what remains visible and what gradually slips from collective memory. The project does not seek to provide clear answers or fixed conclusions. Instead, it presents Fukushima as an ongoing condition, where destruction, reconstruction, memory, and forgetting coexist. By observing these evolving spaces over many years, I hope to create images that encourage reflection on how landscapes become archives of history and how the consequences of catastrophe continue long after the event itself.
